Russian Strikes Kill at Least 15 in Kyiv Amid Air Defence Shortages

At least 15 people were killed in Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight, according to the city’s mayor.

Apartment blocks and warehouses were hit across the city, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said. A children’s hospital and a school were also damaged.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the deaths resulted from a shortage of air defence missiles, which Ukraine relies on Western allies to supply.

Speaking at a damaged apartment block, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Ukraine needed “ammunition, anti-missile systems – we need support from our partners.”

An update from the Ukrainian Air Force indicated that none of the Russian ballistic missiles used in the attack were intercepted.

The Russian defence ministry said it used air, land and sea-based weapons to target military facilities and warehouses.

The strikes began around midnight local time after air raid sirens sounded. Around 20 Russian missiles struck the city. The attacks cut power to thousands of properties in the Kyiv region.

A day of mourning for those killed was declared for Friday.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia used 168 drones and 44 missiles in the attack, mainly targeting Kyiv. Air defences shot down 146 drones and 39 cruise missiles.

Elsewhere, an attack in the Brovary and Boryspil districts of the broader Kyiv region killed one man and wounded seven. One person was killed and 11 were injured in Donetsk Oblast, a local official said.
