US President Donald Trump has instructed the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, citing his very good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the exercises are costly, with much of the expense paid by the United States, and send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile to a country that has been unthreatening and respectful during his presidency.
He noted it was too late to cancel the drills, which were due to begin on Monday, and ordered Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to substantially reduce them. The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises are scheduled to run until 27 August and involve around 18,000 South Korean troops.
Trump also referenced South Korea’s recent decision not to join the United States in efforts related to the denuclearisation of Iran.
South Korean officials stated that the drills would proceed as scheduled. North Korea has not yet commented on the announcement.
The move comes after North Korea conducted ballistic missile tests earlier this month.
